American Amavasya – Poem by N Bajpai

Winter

They rush out to
Dance in falling flakes
Nor’easter blankets
Monsoon madness
Quietly

Spring

Trees open
Tender shoots emerge
Dye eggs in Holi colors
Earth leans into Surya’s embrace
Life hums awake
Again

Summer

Sprinklers twirl
For diamond
skies
I rub salt on roasted corn
With lemon wedge
At a vegetarian
Bar-B-Q

Fall

Leaves
Flame saffron
Diya dances light
From jack-o-lantern
On our American
Amavasya
Amavasya is the new moon day on the Hindu lunar calendar – the Amavasya in Fall refers to Diwali ie the Amavasya in the month of Aswin.
