Proper Handling of Laboratory Waste: By Iqra Jamal

Proper Handling of Laboratory Waste: By Iqra Jamal

Pakistan is advancing in research, science, and technology. It has numerous laboratories (biology, materials, and chemical) across the country that deal with hazardous substances. A significant amount of toxic waste containing acids, chemicals, grease, and oils is being produced in these labs. This waste has occasionally been disposed of improperly that can damage the environment.

Proper handling of laboratory waste is of core importance for environmental safety. Improper handling of which can cause water pollution and waterborne diseases by entering the sanitation system. Moreover, it contributes to solid waste and air pollution. The liquid waste may block the drains resulting in sewage malfunctioning. As a student, I have decided to offer some proposals for waste management practices.

Firstly, the government should devise a national laboratory waste management plan to handle all waste produced inside the labs. A licensed disposal facility with proper transportation system should be employed for this purpose.

Secondly, each category of waste should be addressed differently as per its packaging requirements. The well-labeled and leakage-proof containers should be placed inside each lab to collect waste separately. It will avoid intermixing laboratory waste with other waste materials.

Thirdly, these containers (after properly labeled and sealed) should be transported from each lab to a temporary storage site. It should later be taken away by a licensed waste management agency for proper dumping.

Lastly, prolonged storage of waste inside the residential areas should be avoided. All the managers and staff involved should be given proper training to reduce possible dangers. Documentation and record-keeping of waste should be encouraged.

In a nutshell, such waste management practices will be helpful to reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, and minimize environmental harm. It will help us to accomplish sustainable development goals (SDGs).
