Goethe was introduced to Urdu readers by Poet of the East, Dr. Muhammad Allama Iqbal. Goethe, who was always inspired by the Orient, was drawn towards Hafiz and Shaykh Saadi during his Law studies at Strasbourg [Germany]. His West-Eastern Diwan, or West-östlicher Divan is beautiful collection of poems, inspired by such Persians masters. Allama Iqbal wrote Payam-e-Mashriq پیام مشرق exactly 100 years after Goethe’s Divan.
