اب بھلا چھوڑ کے گھر کیا کرتے

شام کے وقت سفر کیا کرتے

تیری مصروفیتیں جانتے ہیں

اپنے آنے کی خبر کیا کرتے

جب ستارے ہی نہیں مل پائے

لے کے ہم شمس و قمر کیا کرتے

وہ مسافر ہی کھلی دھوپ کا تھا

سائے پھیلا کے شجر کیا کرتے

خاک ہی اوّل و آخر ٹھہری

ر کے ذرّے کو گہر کیا کرتے

رائے پہلے سے بنا لی تو نے

دل میں اب ہم ترے گھر کیا کرتے

عشق نے سارے سلیقے بخشے

حسن سے کسبِ ہنر کیا کرتے

English Translation

Why would we have left home at all?
What journey could one take at dusk?

We know how busy you are—
why would we announce our arrival?

When even the stars were out of reach,
what would we have done with the sun and moon?

He was a traveler made for open sunlight—
what use were trees spreading shade for him?

In the end, it all turned to dust—
what could we have made of a speck anyway?

You had already made up your mind—
what place did we have left in your heart?

Love taught me every grace I know—
what skill could I have learned from beauty alone?
